Composer John Barry and the James Bond films fit together like a glove The composer always knew what worked when he wrote a Bond score. His music, like the films he scored in the series, had the proper balance of high adventure, a little romance, and a bit of sweeping granduer. The score to You Only Live Twice is no exception. Barry's music travels with agent 007 from one set piece to another, taking viewers right along As in the previous Bond scores, the composer finds a way to infuse the score with the sound of film's main locale. The soundtrack has a distinct Asian motif that is masterfully interwoven with Monty Norman's "Bond Theme", as well as the title song, sung by Nancy Sinatra. Unlike some of the more recent Bond scores, Barry was never affraid to use these devices to full advantage. The practice of using the Bond Theme or hints of the title song was never over used-and always came in at the right time.
As part of the reissue of most of the Bond scores, You Only Live Twice, boasts liner notes by film score historian Jeff Bond and a half dozen, previously unreleased (in the US) tracks. Some of these ureleased stuff is the best the score has to offer. Overall highlights of the soundtrack include "Bond Averts World War Three", "James Bond In Japan", "Countdown For Blofeld", "A Drop In The Ocean", and "Twice Is The Only Way To Live".
