For this follow-up to their mega-hit Ice Age, directors Carlos Saldanha and Chris Wedge team with the screenwriting duo behind Parenthood and City Slickers, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel. Robots stars Ewan McGregor as the voice of Rodney Copperbottom, an idealistic robot who wants to convince his electronic brethren to come together and work toward making the world a better place. As the story unfolds, Rodney faces opposition from an evil corporation headed by Big Weld (Mel Brooks) and finds some unlikely allies in the form of a ragtag group of misfit robots called the Rusties and voiced by the likes of Drew Carey and Amanda Bynes. Stanley Tucci and Dianne Wiest provide the voices of Rodney's parents, and Halle Berry portrays his love interest, Cappy.
Soundtrack features a bevy of newly recorded tracks by a variety of performers. For example, soul singer Ricky Fante recorded the track "Shine" especially for the film. Additionally the Fountains of Wayne tailored their new song "Tell Me What You Already Did" toward the movie, as well. Even the film's composer, John Powell (Antz, Chicken Run, Shrek)joins in, delivering "Robot City," a collaboration with the Blue Man Group.
In addition to the newly recorded songs several recent hits will also dot the soundtrack, including "Right Thurr" by Chingy, "I Like That" by Houston, and Stacie Orrico, "(There's Gotta Be) More to Life." Not to mention New Zealand's Steriogram who lend "Walkie Talkie Man," Fatboy Slim's who offers up his "Wonderful Night," and Gomez, who contribute the song "Silence."
The soundtrack will also be fleshed out with some old school sounds from the likes of War (their west coast Latin-funk classic "Low Rider"), James Brown (his seminal "Get Up Offa That Thing" rendered in a new club remix), and R&B supergroup Earth, Wind and Fire, who contributes a brand-new track entitled "Love's Dance," which is a collaboration with superstar producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and will also be included on the band's forthcoming new album.
