Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has been making waves of late, not only due to the extended and intricate game play and the over-the-top violent mayhem (two things which have made it one of the most popular franchises in video game history), but also due to the innovative use of music in the game. The smart folks at Rockstar Games took the concept of in-game soundtracks to the next level, equipping their game beginning with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City with a diverse set of radio stations, each with its own distinct play list featuring the music of established artists.
With GTA:SA the whole radio station concept has been taken to the next level, as the game includes no less than 11 radio stations that run the gamut from classic rock to rap, reggae, country, house, and even talk radio. The game has already generated a double CD compilation/primer, which mixes up a rather narrow selection of the overall game soundtrack (it focused primarily on rap and funk, buffered out by a few classic rock, alt rock, R&B, and country tunes). With the box set, a much more in-depth collection of the in-game music is now available for consumers.
Now astute fans will remember that we stated there were 11 radio stations in GTA: SA, but there are only 8 discs in the box set. So what happened to the other three radio stations? Well, for some odd reason both the Playback FM and Radio Los Santos (the Old School and New School rap stations in the game) have been compiled into a single disc. The game's talk radio station, WCTR has been omitted for obvious reasons. But the most surprising element of the box set is that SF-UR, the underground techno/house station has been left off the box set. Strange, indeed.
