Description:
Not so much a musical as a musical revue, "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" deals with all the popular aspects of dating and love in the modern world. Taken as a kind-of chronolgy of relationship-building, the revue begins with songs about preparing for - and suffering through - first dates, moves through relationships, marriage, kids and finally old-age and death.
It manages all of this with a kind-of lunatic grace that it seems it really snouldn't be able to pull off. It draws heavily from popular songs of the last 30 years (references to "I Am Woman" by Helen Reddy and "You Picked a Fine Time To Leave Me Lucille" spring immediately to mind) and, in some cases, even sets new lyrics to old, sentimental songs. It also manages all of this with a cast of just four people, a piano and a violin.
If you haven't seen it onstage, the soundtrack is still more than enough to follow the idea, but nothing quite makes up for seeing it live. However, I still certainly recommend this for anyone that's shaken their head at the lunacy of dating or relationships in today's world. It's fun, it's fast and it's surprisingly catchy. Some of the songs have run through my head for days.
