- Annamary Dickey
Description:
ALLEGRO turned out to be one of few faltering steps for the illustrious songwriting team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. True, it isn't the best score written by the pair and the show didn't even last a year on Broadway.
The score features a few tiny gems including "The Gentleman is a Dope", introduced by Lisa Kirk, who would go on to fame as Lois/Bianca in the original cast of KISS ME KATE before becoming a top talent in the New York cabaret set.
There's also John Battles (ON THE TOWN), singing "You Are Never Away" as well as the winsome young Muriel O'Malley singing "I Know it Can Happen Again". Gloria Wills makes good with "So Far" (a lovely ballad later brought back for the 1996 Broadway adaptation of STATE FAIR).
Sound quality is quite good considering the age of the material. Fans of Rodgers and Hammerstein as well as Broadway lovers will adore this otherwise-lacklustre score.
