Description:
One of the finest Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals ever made, The Gay Divorcee may boast a thin plot, yet it is a joyous, lively piece of entertainment that showcases the movie musical at its very best. Based on Dwight Taylor and Cole Porter's play The Gay Divorce, the film is about a woman (Rogers) seeking a divorce. She travels to an English seaside resort, pursued by the love-stricken Astaire, whom she mistakes for the hired correspondent in her divorce case. The film has a number of wonderful comedic moments, yet they are overshadowed by the spectacular musical numbers, including "Night and Day" (the only song from the original Broadway musical included in the film) and "The Continental," which won the first Academy Award for Best Song.
