The 1956 version of "Anything Goes" has been somewhat overlooked in recent years, but its music deserves another chance, if only to be reminded of the flavor of movie musicals back in the '50s. Cole Porter wrote the play "Anything Goes," but this version features new songs by Livingston and Evans as well as some familiar Porter tunes. I actually enjoyed the '50s additions, such as "You Gotta Give the People Hoke" and "A Second Hand Turban and a Crystal Ball." Bing Crosby and Donald O'Conner make a good team. I was less impressed with Bing and Mitzi Gaynor's version of "You're the Top," which I found overly cutesy and marred by Gaynor's only-OK voice. It's too bad cast member Phil Harris didn't have any vocals. Three extra tracks appear on the CD, from the 1936 version of "Anything Goes." These aren't Cole Porter songs either, but were specially written for the movie version. "Sailor Beware," "My Heart and I" and "Moonburn" are typical 1930s Crosby, and fun to listen to because of the difference in style from the 1950s version. The first two of this trio have been hard to find for years, so they're a special bonus.
