It's been many a ho-hum Sunday night since we learned Bette and Tina called it quits. Wrongly accused of hooking up with the daughter of her married lover, Shane wiped away the tears and stood on the brink of morphing back to noncommittal steel. Meanwhile, recovering alcoholic Kit finds herself increasingly wooed by trans guy, Ivan. Sexy Marina leaves a desperate coded message on sexually confused Jenny's answering machine. And lonely, bisexual Alice makes an equally desperate late night proposal to her longtime tennis star pal, Dana.
In fabulous full-tilt style, Showtime's The L Word suspended every character in a first-rate, personalized cliffhanger. But, at long last, season two is here. On February 20, The L Word continues the hit series that gave us a new kind of hour-long soapy drama: One that focuses on the domestic and professional lives of a circle of sexy, lesbian urban professionals living in sunny LA - characters of increasing interest to the television industry (see accompanying story).
Can you blame the thievery? With Showtime's decision to air The L Word in January 2004, the landmark series instantly attracted a cult audience of viewers who strongly identified with one or more of its eight central characters. And its stylistic, innovative storylines led critics to respect the show for showing erotic, no-apologies sex between women without the pretext of a dare, drugs, alcohol or any of the many stunts of yesteryear that have preceded the lesbian kiss on TV.
