The TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls in Austin is a genuine, over-the-top athletic competition, punked up with outrageous and unexpected antics. The original concepts of the traditional all-American roller derby have been updated with a raucous, good-time, Texas twist.
And then, there are the competitors' real lives. They are waitresses and schoolteachers, biologists and accountants. One is a maternity nurse, another is a systems analyst. Many are married. Some have children. And some are just wild chicks out for a good time. However, all are powerful athletes who enjoy the adrenaline kick that comes from knocking someone flat over a railing and are under the spell of the strangest - and perhaps the most singularly American sport - Roller Derby.
